Equine-assisted EMDREye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy proven effective for trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help the brain reprocess distressing memories, reducing their emotional intensity. Research shows EMDR can lead to faster symptom reduction than traditional talk therapy, with multiple randomized controlled trials demonstrating significant decreases in PTSD symptoms and improved overall functioning (Shapiro, 2017; Watts et al., 2013).
EMDR has been shown in randomized controlled trials to lead to dramatic reductions in PTSD. In several studies of single-trauma survivors, 84-90% no longer met diagnostic criteria for PTSD after just three 90-minute EMDR sessions. PMC+1 Also, more broadly, after eight EMDR sessions, about 60% of participants in certain adult studies no longer qualified for a PTSD diagnosis, with benefits maintained at follow-up.
